SAPROLEGNIASIS OF BARBUS SHARPEYI ,(BUNNEI FISH) IN BASRAH / IRAQ

Among 600 bunnei fishes transferred from Qurna marshes to fish ponds at Basrah University/Marine Science Center, 211 fishes were infected with saprolegniasis during the period from January to March,2005 constituting a percentage of infection of 35.1% which was diagnosed by its clinical features and by direct examination with 10% KOH solution and by culture. The cultutred fungus was Saprolegnia parasitica.
FOOD AND FEEDING ACTIVITY OF ILISHA MEGALOPTERA LARVAE IN SHATT AL-ARAB ESTUARY

The guts of 110 specimens of Ilisha megaloptera larvae ranging in length between 6-21mm were examined. The study showed that I. megaloptera in the larval stage is phytoplankton feeders, consume mainly centric and pinnate diatoms, with centric diatoms being more important that pinnate especially in the smaller size larvae. Spatial and seasonal variations showed that there were no differences in the incidence of feeding during the survey in all stations sampled. This study showed that larval I.megaloptera appear to select food of a certain type (diatoms), which do not vary with the larval size
INVASION OF ZEBRA MUSSEL DREISSENA POLYMORPHA PALLAS,1771) INTO THE COOLING SYSTEM WATER SUPPLY OF AL-MUSAYAB THERMAL POWER PLANT / IRAQ

Zebra mussels Dreissena polymorpha are tiny bivalve mollusca , invade water supply of cooling system unit in Al-Musayab power plant, 60 km south-west Baghdad and grow to dense clusters. Its ability to rapidly colonize intake structures, such as pipes and screens causing reduction in water pumping capabilities .Some Biological aspects of zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha have been studied and some physical & chemical parameters were examined as alimenting factors for the species .Samples collecting was done monthly from two sites within the water system , the first was the traveling band screen (TBS ) and the other site was small canal collecting excess water passing from TBS .Biological studies revealed that the samples collected from the canal includes five size groups with average length of 5.7 ; 11.3 ; 16.7 ; 21.9 & 27.3 mm. In TBS , the individuals found all over the year with highest number of 135 individuals recorded in August . Individuals of a length of 11.3 & 16.7mm were the dominant.In general, from total number of 799 individuals collected from TBS, 388 individuals were of size of 11.3mm and 239 individual was of size 16.7mm While no large specimens of large size group of 27.3mm were recorded in TBS.To study the settlement rate of larvae, several concert tiles of (25X25cm) were suspended at depths of 2,4& 6 m. in the sedimentation pond (12m depth)The number of juveniles were counted monthly . The result showed that there were two peaks of settlement , one in June and the other in September and October .Depth of 6m was the most suitable for settlement.The average length of settled juveniles ranged between 3.5-6.1mm. Water temperature in the site ranged between 11-32o C , Dissolved oxygen was 4.8-8.3ml/L . The highest value of turbidity was 49NUT.Ca++ was 68-136mg/l and Mg++ was 34-72mg
SHORT-TERM COLD STORAGE OF GRASS CARP (CTENOPHARYNGODON IDELLA) REARED IN EARTHEN POND

The semen of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) had been stored by using short-term cold storage technique. The experiments conducted in Marine Science Center freshwater fish hatchery. After hand stripping of the males the semen was used in several treatments using air, antibiotic (streptomycin sulphate) or both. The milt was kept in small plastic bags placed in ice. The activity and motility of the sperms was tested after 5, 9, 13, 17, 25 hrs of preservation.
The results showed that the activity and motility were decreased with storage time. Even though the sperms were good to be used to induce spawning, it was found that there were no significant differences in percentage of active sperms between the time 5 and 9 hrs after storage. The usage of the antibiotic was found to increase the percentage of active sperms at the end of the storage time. This study showed that this simple technique could be used to solve the problem of sperm shortage, and to ensure sperms needed to artificial fertilization during the spawning season
RELATIONS OF SIZE AND AGE OF NAQIM POMADASYS ARGENTEUS WITH NETS MESH SIZES IN RED SEA FIHERIES OF YEMEN

Fishing regulation in terms of gillnets mesh size suitable for fishing certain length, weight and age of Naqim Pomadasys argentius was studied . After determination of age for the fish samples, length weight ( W = 0.032 x L 2.742 ) was used to convert length readings to weight. Length ( L) –circumference (b) relationship was also calculated as b= 22.9 + 0.603 L , length coefficient ( K = b/ 4L) was then estimated as 0.180 in small-sized fish ( 13-24 cm) to 0.164 in large ones (35 – 44 cm) . This put Naqim in the group (wide ) according to Barant divisions. The length equivalent was then used to calculate the relationship between mesh size(a) & length (L) as : a = 5.663 + 0.151 L ( r = 0.996).
In conclusion, net mesh size of 34.1 mm would have a harmful effect on fishing small sized fish of less than 1 year old which would be prevented from having the chance to reproduce at least once or twice before being fished. Fish in this age is expected to be immature. Nets with mesh size of 51.7 mm is suitable for fishing large fish ( age I – IV ) which is considered as legal fishing. For the more profitable fishing, nets with mesh size of 64.5 mm are highly recommended as they catch large sized fish of age IV to VI .
Fish farming actuality in Basrah Governorates

The actual status of Fish culture in Basrah governorate was discussed using several important parameters, such as construction method, locality, size, management practices, and economical consideration. It was found that an apparent delay in the fish farming activity in Basrah in comparison with middle of Iraq. Recently 93.3% the fish farms in Basrah are not working. The total cultured area in Basrah consist 4.77% of the total area used for fish culture in Iraq. The construction methods employed were not suitable for water and soil features in Basrah. The fertilization, feeding and all production activities showed a bad management, due to the lack of suitable and proper fish farming knowledge. The economical parameters showed a great differences with that registered in Baghdad and the area. The production profit was calculated to be 5.78 million I.D /Donam (One Donam =1/4 hectare), Which could be considered as a good profit to expand the investment in fish farming in Basrah governorate.
STUDY ON SOME HEAMATOLOGICAL CHANGES IN CYPRINUS CARPIO ( L. ) FISH AFTER EXPOSURE TO DIFFERENT CONCENTRATIONS OF SUMCIDIN FENVALERATE ( 20% ) PESTICIDE

C. carpio fish was exposed to different concentrations of sumcidin pesticide ( 0.005 , 0.05 and 0.5 ) mg l . All treatment fish was showed oscillation in rates some of hematological parameters in present study compared with control fish . Red and white cells , hemoglobin , P.C.V. , M.C.V. and M.C.H.C. were showed decrease in their rates averages in treated fish compared with control , abnormality shapes in red blood cells in exposure fish to Sumciden pesticide observed compared with control .
DISTRIBUTION AND COMPOSITION OF ZOOPLANKTON IN EUPHRATES RIVER NEAR AL-MUS

Quantity and quality composition of Cladocera were studied throughout a period from July 2002 to March 2003. Three sites in Euphrates near Al-Mussaib power station were selected (S1, S2 and S3). The present study recorded 38 taxa of Cladocera, belonged to 15 genera , some of these were dominant as Alona , Ceriodaphnia and Daphnia. The species of Alona guttata, Chydorus gibbus and Scapholeberis kingi occurred at all sites throughout the study period . The highest mean values of bio-diversity (2.94) were recorded at S1 below the thermal effluent compared with other two sites. The present study showed variation in the composition of the community due to the effluent of Al-Mussaib power station in Euphrates river.
EFFECT OF SALINITY ACCLIMATION ON FOOD INTAKE, DIGESTIBILITY AND EVACUATION RATE IN LIZA ABU JUVENILES

The results obtained for the juveniles of Liza abu showed that in high salinity there was a decrease in food intake (1.88%) compared to low salinity (7g/l) and tap water (1.5g/l). Also the total digestibility decreased 10% with increasing salinity from1.5 to 15 7g/l as a result of increasing the evacuation rate, where values reached 88.39% and 90.3% from total faces weight in salinity 7 and 15 g/l respectively after 18 hrs.
ANALYTICAL STUDY OF THE FISHERIES IN THE LOWER REACHES OF THE TIGRIS RIVER, NORTH QURNA, BASRAH, IRAQ

The fisheries of the lower reaches of Tigris river, north Qurna in Basrah Governorate have been analyzed during the period from January to December 2005. The fishing boats used there varied in lengths form 5 to 10m, of which 50% were motorized with 25-75 HP. Seine and drift gill nets are the main fishing gears used, their lengths ranged from 100 to 200m with mesh sizes of 14-100mm and 7-32mm for seine and gill nets respectively. The number of fishermen in each boat varied from 1 to 7. Twenty three fish species were recorded caught in the area, of which eight were marine species, belonging to twelve fish families, in addition to shrimps. The total catches ranged from 629Kg in January - march to 3335Kg in July- September with total catch of 7671Kg. Three species namely catfish Silurus triostegus, crucian carp Carassius carassius and
